BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) set a school record for kills in a single season while leading The University of Scranton women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Fredonia on Friday evening at the Golden Eagle Invitational at the College at Brockport.

Kirwan had one of her finest matches of the season, finishing with 23 kills while hitting .321 and adding six digs. The Royals (20-15) needed every one of those kills in the 25-16, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory as they overcame deficits of 6-0 and 18-13 in the pivotal third set.

Entering the night needing just three kills to break the record, Kirwan wasted little time, breaking the record on Scranton's fourth point of the match. The milestone kill broke the previous record of 487, set by Marta DeLong in 2004. Kirwan finished the night with 508 kills on the season with two more regular season matches and at least one postseason match remaining.

For her career, Kirwan now has 830 kills, which rank tied for 15th all-time in Royals history.

Senior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also had a big game on Friday night, finishing with 44 assists. She now has 3,064 career assists, which rank fourth on the school's all-time career list. She is also 31 assists shy of becoming the sixth player in Scranton history to record 1,000 assists in a single season.

Sophomore middle hitter Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added 10 kills and two block assists, and sophomore outside hitter Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Marie Academy) added nine kills. Senior libero Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) added a team-high 21 digs in the victory.

Scranton reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season and fourth out of the last five.

The Royals will be back in action in the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday when they take on Allegheny at 12:30 p.m. and Brockport at 2:30 p.m. in their final two regular season matches.
