Box score vs. Brockport
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Less than 24 hours after breaking the school record, sophomore outside hitter Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) set the Landmark Conference record for kills in a single season as The University of Scranton women's volleyball team won a pair of matches on the final day of the regular season.
Kirwan finished the afternoon with 43 kills in the two matches, giving her 551 on the season. That breaks the previous record of 525, set by Juniata's Amber Thomas in 2007. On Friday night, Kirwan broke the previous school record of 488, set by Marta DeLong in 2004.
Kirwan's play helped the Royals (22-15) roll to a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-18, 25-13) over Allegheny (9-16) to open the day. In the final match, Scranton pulled out a 3-2 decision (25-17, 11-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-7) over the host College at Brockport (30-3).
In the win over Allegheny, Kirwan finished with 16 kills, 11 digs and five total blocks. Senior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished with 32 assists and 13 digs, and her twin sister, Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had 20 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added six kills and four block assists.
Against Brockport, Kirwan matched her season high with 27 kills to go along with 22 digs. Brittany Cafiero had 58 assists, one shy of her career high set earlier this season, and Danielle Cafiero had 27 digs, two shy of her career high, also set earlier this year.
Manning also had a career-high 15 kills and two block assists in the five-set win, and freshman outside hitter Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished with nine kills, five digs and a block solo.
With her 90 total assists on Saturday, Brittany Cafiero now has 1,059 on the season. She is the sixth player in Scranton history to eclipse 1,000 assists in a single season. She now has three of the top 12 single-season assist totals in Scranton history.
Scranton now enters the postseason as the fourth seed in this coming week's Landmark Conference playoffs. They will visit top-seeded Juniata for a semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m.
