SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton field hockey team gave up goals in each half to visiting Catholic on Saturday, as the Royals dropped their 2016 season finale to the visiting Cardinals, 2-0, at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the defeat, the Royals end the 2016 season with a 5-12 overall mark and a 2-5 ledger in the Landmark Conference. Catholic ends the regular season with a 10-6 mark, 6-1 in the Landmark Conference.
The match also served as the program's annual Senior Day, in which Amanda Maresca (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) were honored for their contributions to the program before the match.
In the opening half, the Royals were strong on offense throughout, taking five shots from the field. Four of those shots were on goal, but each time, Scranton was turned away by the Catholic defense.
The Cardinals took just one shot in the half and made the most of their opportunity, scoring the game's first goal in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. In the second half, Catholic took all the momentum they built up with the goal and controlled play, scoring their second goal in the 55th minute to go up two goals.
Scranton took only two shots in the second period, but once again, both were saved, as Catholic walked away with a 2-0 victory over the Royals.
Overall, Scranton outshot Catholic 7-5 in the defeat, and held a 9-6 edge on penalty corners. Junior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) took the most shots on the day for Scranton, finishing with three (all of which were on goal).
In net, freshman Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) played most of the match for Scranton, making three saves in the final match of her season.
