Volleyball Splits Matches With Gallaudet, Lebanon Valley Friday Night

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore attacker Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) posted 15 kills and senior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had 38 assists, as the University of Scranton volleyball team knocked off Gallaudet in a tri-match at Lebanon Valley on Friday night in non-conference action.

In the night-cap, the Royals dropped a hard-fought decision to host Lebanon Valley in five sets. With the spilt, Scranton went to 11-13 overall on the year.

Against Gallaudet, the Royals battled back from a loss in the first set, taking three straight games to win their 11th match of the 2016 season in four sets (17-23, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16).

In the win, Kirwan led the way yet again for Scranton, registering her 17th double-digit kill match of the year with her 15-kill effort.

Elsewhere, sophomore Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) slammed home nine kills and had a team-best 12 digs, while junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and freshman Victoria Capogna (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had eight kills, apiece.

For Cafiero, the senior went over 30 assists in a match for the ninth time on the year.

In the night-cap against LVC, the Royals dropped a heartbreaker in five sets (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 16-18).

Kirwan led the way again for the Royals on the attack with 14 kills, while sophomore Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added 12 kills in the defeat (along with three solo blocks). Cafiero finished with 38 assists, while Rentzheimer led the defense with 16 digs.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Neumann for the Knights Classic where they will take on Penn State Behrend and the host Neumann. The PSU-Behrend match starts at 12 p.m., followed by the Neumann match at 2 p.m.
