SCRANTON, Pa. - A goal late in regulation by Susquehanna was the difference, as the University of Scranton field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the River Hawks in Landmark Conference action at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday.
With the defeat, Scranton fell to 4-8 overall, 1-2 in the Landmark Conference, while Susquehanna improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark with the win.
In the opening half, Scranton was first to strike late in the period, as junior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Caroll) scored her eighth goal of the year off an assist from senior Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), giving the Royals the 1-0 lead entering intermission.
For Yorey, it was her second assist of the year, as Scranton controlled play in the opening half, outshooting Susquehanna by a 4-2 advantage.
But, in the second half, Susquehanna took back control of the match, outshooting Scranton 7-3 in the period.
In the 49th minute, the River Hawks tied the match with a goal, then with 37 seconds left, Taylor Franco of SU scored the game-winner off a deflected save, giving the River Hawks the win.
Overall, Susquehanna held a 9-7 advantage on shots in the match and a 15-5 edge in penalty corners.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Drew for another Landmark Conference showdown. Action gets underway at 7 pm.
