The University of Scranton baseball team could not overcome a seven-run second inning by Juniata in what eventually ended in a 10-4 loss to the Eagles in the finale of their Landmark Conference series at Connell Park on Sunday.
The Royals (13-14, 8-7 Landmark) committed four errors in the decisive inning, helping the Eagles (8-23, 4-11 Landmark) avoid the sweep.
Scranton had just eight hits in the loss, six coming from the combined efforts of sophomore outfielders Chase Standen (Newtown, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford). Standen's day included a double and an RBI while Trotter added a stolen base to his three singles.
Junior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) also came off the bench to deliver an RBI double in the loss.
Junior right-hander John Kranick (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) was a bright spot on the mound for the Royals, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two in 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Prior to the game, the Royals presented the Alicia Tamboia Memorial Sportsmanship Award, given annually to the team member who exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship and care for others. This year's recipient is senior outfielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South).
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Wayne, N.J. for a non-conference game against William Paterson at 4 p.m.
