DALLAS, Pa. - The University of Scranton softball team dropped two tough decisions at Misericordia on Tuesday, losing in game one of a doubleheader, 3-2, then falling 7-5 in game two.
With the defeats, Scranton fell to 14-12 on the year.
In game one, Scranton was able to open a 2-0 lead early, as junior Jenna Snyder (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) had an RBI double in the second that gave the Royals an early 1-0 lead, then in the top of the fourth, junior Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had another RBI double, giving the Royals a two-run cushion.
But, Misericordia gradually got back into the game, plating single runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game up at 2-2 entering the seventh.
After Scranton stranded two on base in the top half, Misericordia scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, giving them the one-run win.
Overall in the first game, Snyder ended 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Kaitlin O'Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) was 2-for-2.
In the second game, Scranton once again leapt out to a lead, going up 5-0 in the sixth inning.
First in the top of the second, freshman Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) had an RBI triple, while sophomore Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) had the other RBI in the frame on a single to give the Royals an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Royals extended the lead out to five runs, as Snyder roped a two-RBI double, while junior Marisa Ciriello (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) had an RBI single.
However, Misericordia came back strong on the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven runs to grab the lead by two entering the seventh. There, Scranton went down in order, as the host Cougars walked away with a come-from-behind win.
In the second game, Snyder once again went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Ciriello was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Royals will look to bounce back on Friday at Hunter in another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
