The University of Scranton baseball team bounced back in the second game to earn a split of its Landmark Conference doubleheader against Catholic on Saturday at Connell Park.

Catholic jumped out to an early lead en route to a 10-7 win in the opener. The Royals did the same in the second game, leading to a 17-8 win. Sunday's final game of the series has been postponed due to the forecast for frigid temperatures and high winds. A makeup date has not been announced.

Game One – Catholic 10, Scranton 7 (box score)

The Cardinals (10-12, 2-5 Landmark) took the opener after taking leads of 4-0 after half an inning and 10-4 in the middle of the fourth.

Senior first baseman Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) finished 4-for-5 with a double, homer, three runs and two RBIs in the loss. Sophomore center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had two hits, two RBIs, a run and a stolen base, and sophomore shortstop Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) singled, scored a run and drove in a run.

Game Two – Scranton 17, Catholic 8 (box score)

The Royals wasted little time taking control, scoring seven times in the first with the aid of three Cardinals errors. Scranton added a run in the second and put the game away with eight more in the third.

Schneider finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, and Trotter was also 3-for-5 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base. Sophomore third baseman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) added a pair of singles, three RBIs, three runs and a stolen base.

Scranton also received two singles and two runs from sophomore designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and an RBI double and a run from sophomore catcher Kevin Nolan (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Prep).

With Sunday's game postponed, the Royals next game will be Tuesday against Wilkes at 4 p.m. at Connell Park.
