MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton baseball team entered the weekend needing to win two of three at Drew to earn a Landmark Conference playoff spot. After a tough, 11-inning loss in the opener on Saturday, the Royals saw their playoff hopes disappear in a game two loss in the doubleheader at Doc Young Field.

Scranton (16-20, 9-11 Landmark) finds itself tied for fifth with Catholic (19-19, 9-11), a game behind Drew (17-21, 10-10). Should the Royals win Sunday and tie Drew for fourth, the Rangers hold the tie-breaker by way of winning two of three this weekend. If Catholic also wins, forcing a three-way tie for fourth, Catholic would earn the fourth seed by way of a 4-2 record against Scranton and Drew. The Rangers would be 3-3 and the Royals would be 2-4.

Game One – Drew 7, Scranton 6, 11 innings (box score)

Drew forced extra innings with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, then held the Royals scoreless in extra frames until the Rangers were able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the 11th on a squeeze bunt.

Scranton led 4-1 in the middle of the fourth, powered by solo home runs by sophomore designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and senior left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South).

Drew rallied for a 5-4 lead after six, but the Royals responded with a pair of runs in the seventh on Standen's RBI fielder's choice that plated a second run thanks to an error on the play. But the Rangers scored in the bottom of the frame and had the final say in the 11th

Sophomore center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) led Scranton with three hits, including two doubles, an RBI and a run. His RBI double in the third inning was the 100th hit of his career.

Junior right fielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) had two hits and junior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) had an RBI single.

Game Two – Drew 9, Scranton 3 (box score)

Drew took control with two runs in the first and six in the second en route to the win. Trotter again led the Royals with a single, double, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Sophomore Ryan Coonahan (Oreland, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had a pinch-hit homer and Standen added a double in the loss.

The teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a nine-inning game beginning at noon.
