WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The 19th-ranked University of Scranton men's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the 2016 season on Saturday at Lycoming, falling by a 3-1 decision on the road.

With the loss, the Royals fell to 5-1 overall, while Lycoming improved to 2-3-2 with the victory.

After a scoreless first half that saw Lycoming hold a 7-6 advantage on shots, they broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute with a goal to go up, 1-0. Lycoming then added another goal in the 84th minute to go up 2-0 and appeared they would coast down the stretch to a win.

But, the Royals didn't go out quietly, as freshman Jonathan Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) scored in the 86th minute off an assist from sophomore Michael Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), slashing the Lycoming lead in half to 2-1 with just over four minutes left in regulation.

However, Lycoming answered back with a goal in the 88th minute to put Scranton away, handing the Royals their first loss of the season in the process.

Overall, Scranton held a 16-15 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage on corner kicks. In net, senior Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) still made eight saves to keep Scranton alive for much of the match in a losing effort.

The University of Scranton men's soccer team will now take the week off, returning to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Moravian to open Landmark Conference play for the year. Things get underway at 7:30 p.m.
