SCRANTON, Pa. - Visiting King's scored goals in each half, as the University of Scranton field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Monarchs on Sunday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the defeat, the Royals fell to 3-3 on the year, while King's improved to 4-3 overall with the victory.
In the first period, King's controlled the match, outshooting Scranton 9-0 in the first 35 minutes.
Despite the dazzling efforts on freshman goalie Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), who made seven saves alone in the first period, the Monarchs were able to score a goal in the ninth minute of action to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
It was more of the same to start the second half, but the Royal defense continued to keep the Monarchs off the scoreboard for much of the period, with Ackerman making three more saves.
Finally, with under 10 minutes left, Scranton posted some chances on net. In all, the Royals had five penalty corners in the final moments of regulation, with the Royals' best chance of the match coming on a shot on goal by junior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) in the 64th minute.
Unfortunately for Campbell and Scranton, the shot was saved, and King's added the go-ahead score in the 68th minute to take the two score victory.
Overall, Ackerman ended the match with 10 saves, as freshman Caroline Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and junior Hailey Marini (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland Central) also made defensive saves in the defeat. Campbell ended the match firing three shots (two on goal), as well.
The University of Scranton field hockey team will look to bounce back on Tuesday, as they host Marywood at Fitzpatrick Field beginning at 7 p.m.
