Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. - A goal seven minutes into the first overtime period sunk the University of Scranton field hockey team on Tuesday night against Marywood, as the Pacers collected a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the loss, Scranton fell to 3-4 on the year, while Marywood improved to 5-2 with the victory.

In the opening half, Scranton was first to strike, as junior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored her fifth goal of the 2016 season off an assist from sophomore Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township), giving the Royals the early 1-0 edge.

That lead held for the remainder of the half, as freshman goalie Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) kept Marywood off the scoreboard with three saves in the first 35 minutes.

But, the second half was a different story, as Marywood was able to swing momentum in their favor after tying the match in the 52nd minute on a goal.

Before Scranton could collect themselves after the strike, the Pacers scored again two minutes later, and just like that, took a 2-1 lead.

The lead held until there was about 10 minutes to go in regulation, when the Royals caught a break.

There, Scranton was awarded a penalty stroke and senior Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) was successful on the attempt, tying the match up at 2-2, and ultimately sending the game to an extra frame.

But there, Marywood took control of the match back and on their second attempted shot found the back of the net to win.

Overall, Marywood outshot Scranton in the contest, 12-9, and held an 8-4 edge on penalty corners, as well.

The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Saturday, opening Landmark Conference play for the year against Moravian at Fitzpatrick Field. Things get underway at 1 p.m.
