Volleyball Knocks off Marywood, Wilkes in Pair of Three-Game Sweeps

SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton volleyball team rolled to a pair of straight set victories on Thursday night inside the John Long Center, besting both Wilkes and Marywood in three sets.

With the pair of victories, the Royals moved to 9-8 overall on the year.

In their first match of the evening against Marywood, the Royals made quick work of the visiting Pacers in three sets, as Scranton rallied from a deficit in each game to take the win.

In game one, Marywood took an 11-8 lead early after rattling off eight straight points, But, Scranton rebounded, going on a 7-2 run right after the game was tied up at 15-all to take an insurmountable 22-17 lead on the Pacers.

Despite a late comeback attempt from Marywood that cut the Scranton lead down to 23-22, the Royals were able to win the final two points to take the game by three.

It was more of the same in game two, as both teams were knotted up at 14-14 before another Scranton rally in the middle of the game put away Marywood.

This time an 8-1 surge by the Royals put them up for good, as they coasted down the stretch for an eight point win to go up 2-0.

In the third and final game, Marywood opened a lead early and held it through the middle of the match, holding an 18-16 edge on the Royals late. But, Scranton's final rally of the match put away Marywood for the game, as a 9-1 run to end it gave Scranton the victory in straight sets.

Overall, sophomore Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) led the attack in the first game of the night with a match-high 13 kills. Senior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) posted 20 assists in the win, while junior Erica Byrne (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) had 15 digs on the defensive end for Scranton.

In the final match of the night, the Royals dominated Wilkes from the first serve in a three-set win in Scranton's final match before opening Landmark Conference play this weekend.

Overall, freshman Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) paced the Royal attack in the Wilkes victory, ending the night with 10 kills, which was her second double-digit kill match of the season.

Elsewhere, junior Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) ended with nine kills, while senior setter Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) finished with 19 assists.

On defense, junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the way with 10 digs, while freshman Victoria Capogna (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had four block-assists up front to round out the top performers in the win.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Susquehanna and Juniata in a pair of Landmark Conference matches inside the John Long Center. The Susquehanna match will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Juniata contest at 4 p.m.
