Senior midfielder Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and junior forward Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) each scored a pair of first-half goals as The University of Scranton field hockey team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Moravian in the Landmark Conference opener at Fitzpatrick Field.
Scranton (4-4, 1-0 Landmark) also received goals from sophomore forward Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, Pa./West Morris Mendham) and freshman forward Grace McClatchy (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll). Tolley added a pair of assists and sophomore midfielder Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) also had a helper.
The Royals struck quickly when they earned a penalty stroke in the fourth minute, which Yorey converted for an early 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Yorey scored an unassisted goal to double the lead and put Scranton in control.
Campbell then scored goals in the 22nd and 32nd minutes, first tipping in a ball played in by Tolley, and later tipping in a cross from McVeagh. Campbell now leads the team in goals (7) and points (16).
McClatchey added a goal on an assist by Tolley in the 65th minute, and Tolley scored an unassisted goal four minutes later to complete the scoring for the Royals.
Scranton held a commanding 27-3 edge in shots over the Greyhounds (0-7, 0-1 Landmark). Scranton also had 14 penalty corners to just one for Moravian.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
