ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) led the University of Scranton volleyball attack once again on Friday, as the Royals split a pair of matches on day one of the 2016 Buttermaker Tournament on the campus of Muhlenberg College.
After suffering a three-set loss to Ithaca, the Royals bounced back to take down DeSales in four sets in the nightcap. With the spilt, Scranton is now 5-3 on the season.
Against DeSales, Scranton broke open a match knotted up at one set apiece in the third and fourth sets, rolling to six and eight point victories over the final two games to break a three match losing streak (25-15, 18-25, 25-19, 25-16).
In the win, Kirwan was dominant on the attack, slamming home a match-high 23 kills, while recording 12 digs on the defensive end. For Kirwan, it marked the third time in five matches she has gone over 20 kills in a match.
Elsewhere, sophomore Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) went into double-digits in the kill department in the victory, ending the match with 11, which is a new career-high for her.
Meanwhile, senior Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) set up the attack for Scranton all match long, ending with 38 assists, to go along with four service aces and 11 digs. Senior Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also had a strong match, ending with 27 digs to lead the defense in the four-set victory.
In their first match of the Buttermaker Tournament, Ithaca got the best of the Royals in three sets (23-25, 28-30, 22-25). Kirwan led the way yet again for Scranton in the defeat, ending with 17 kills and 15 digs. Monastra chipped in with eight kills in the hard-fought loss, as well.
Action at the Buttermaker Tournament wraps up Saturday afternoon, with the Royals playing two more matches. At 12 p.m., Scranton takes on Marymount, then at 2 p.m. take on the hosts Muhlenberg to finish off the Tournament.
