HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's soccer team continued to play stellar defense, posting its ninth shutout of the season by defeating Juniata, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon. The victory clinches a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs for the Royals.

Scranton (9-2-2, 5-0-0 Landmark) scored twice in the second half to stretch its unbeaten streak to eight straight, seven of which have been shutouts. The Royals received an own goal in the 67th minute and a goal from senior forward Kelly Pompey (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) in the 72nd.

The own goal came on a scramble in front of the net when the Juniata goalkeeper had possession, but lost control and the ball fell into the goal. Scranton doubled its lead five minutes later when Pompey scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist by junior midfielder Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy), her second of the year.

The Royals held a 17-6 edge in shots, including 11-5 in the second half. Junior forward Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and senior defender Hannah DeMars (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) both had four shots to lead the team. Scranton also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) finished with five saves, four in the second half, to earn her ninth win and eighth shutout of the season. She has now allowed just one goal in her last 866:55 in goal.

The women's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when the Royals host Haverford at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
