SCRANTON, Pa. - In her final regular season match at Fitzpatrick Field in her career, senior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) not only broke the single-season record for goals scored, but tallied all three scores on the day for the University of Scranton field hockey team, including the game-winner in the 67th minute to lift the Royals to a thrilling 3-2 win over Goucher on Saturday in Landmark Conference play.

With the victory, the Royals continue their best start in program history at 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the Landmark Conference. The 15 victories for Scranton are the second most in a season in program history, just one short of a pair of 16-win campaigns in 1997 and 1998.

Goucher fell to 4-9 and 1-5 in the Landmark Conference with the defeat.

Before the game, the Royals field hockey program honored their five seniors for 2017: Campbell, Olivia Adams (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), Ryan Jones (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Jessica Kaplowitz (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and Hailey Marini (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland Central).

The scoring started fast for Scranton in the win, as Campbell scored her historic 26th goal of the season one minute and 10 seconds into the match to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead. The goal broke a 32-year old record for most goals in a season for Campbell, as the record was previously held by Denise Atkinson (1985).

Freshman Megan Gallagher (Thorndale, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) had an assist on the play, which was the seventh assist of the year for her.

Goucher, however, fought back to tie the game up with a goal of their own in the 27th minute. But, in the 31st minute, Campbell scored again, this time unassisted to give Scranton the 2-1 edge entering intermission.

To start the second half, Goucher came out and tied the match fast, as the Gophers scored a goal 48 seconds into the second period that knotted the match up at 2-2. For the majority of the period, the Gophers controlled play, as they fired seven total shots, five of which were on net.

However, freshman goalie Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had a terrific half for Scranton after giving up the early goal, as she made three saves throughout the period to keep the match knotted up at 2-2 entering the final five minutes of regulation.

Things came to a head with about three minutes to go, as the Scranton offense attacked the net. On a breakaway, Campbell passed to sophomore Nicolette Keale (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) behind the net, who proceeded to find a streaking Campbell near the net. Campbell then fired a shot into the back of the net, scoring her third goal of the day and 28th of the year to give the Royals a 3-2 lead.

For the final two-plus minutes of regulation, Scranton played strong defense and played keep away, salting the game away to collect a thrilling one-score win on Senior Day.

Overall, Goucher outshot Scranton, 10-5, in the win, while both the Gophers and Royals had six penalty corners, apiece, in the contest. In net, Cyr ended the day with four saves, while Kaplowitz had a defensive save in the victory.

The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Vassar for a non-conference match. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
