GENESEO, N.Y. - Junior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was dominant yet again on the attack for the University of Scranton volleyball team, as she slammed home a match-high 27 kills (hitting .458 in the process) to lead the Royals to a 3-1 win at SUNY-Geneseo in non-conference action on Tuesday night (25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21).
With the win, the Royals will enter the final week off the regular season with a program record best 33-3 overall record. Scranton also ends regular season non-conference play for the year with the victory, finishing with a 29-3 mark.
SUNY-Geneseo fell to 19-10 overall with the defeat.
In the win, Scranton raced out to a 2-0 lead, dominating the first set by eight points, while taking the second by three. But, in the third, Geneseo came back to force a fourth game, rolling to a 25-19 victory.
In that fourth game, Scranton rallied from a deficit in the middle of the set, as Geneseo led 16-13. The Royals then rattled off seven straight points to go up 20-16, and never looked back, capturing the set and match with the 25-21 win.
Overall, Kirwan was a force to be reckoned with in the win, as she notched a season-best 27 kills in the win. The 27-kill effort also matched a career-high in a match for the junior, as she had 27 kills in three different matches in 2016. Kirwan also posted another double-double in the win, finishing with 13 digs.
Meanwhile, senior Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) chipped in with 10 kills, and junior Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished with nine kills. Setting up the attack all night was freshman Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) who had a whopping 51 assists in the win. For Norman, it marked the third time on the 2017 season she's posted at least 50 assists in a match.
On defense, senior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the way with 18 digs, while freshman libero Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) had 15 digs. Norman finished with 13 digs to round out the top performances on the night for the Royals.
Scranton will now set its sights to their final two regular-season games of the season on Saturday, which both will be played at Landmark Conference rival Susquehanna. The Royals will first take on the host Riverhawks at 12 p.m., then take on Juniata in their Landmark Conference and regular season finale at 2:30 p.m.
With a win in either match, the Royals will host a Landmark Conference Playoff match in the John Long Center next week, while a pair of victories on Saturday will clinch Scranton the top seed in the Landmark playoffs, along with home court advantage throughout.
