Men's Soccer Falls at No. 24 Drew in Landmark Conference Match, 2-0

MADISON, N.J. - Host and 24th-ranked Drew scored a goal in each half, and kept the visiting University of Scranton men's soccer team off the scoreboard for the match, as the Rangers knocked off the Royals, 2-0, on Wednesday night in Landmark Conference action.

With the defeat, Scranton dropped to 7-4-0 overall and 1-2 in the Landmark Conference. Drew stayed unbeaten on the year with the win, improving to 11-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the Landmark.

In the contest, Drew go on the board early, scoring in the sixth minute to go up quickly, 1-0. Scranton's defensive unit, however, held through the rest of the half, keeping the Rangers off the board thanks to a pair of saves by sophomore goalie Blake Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep).

On the offensive end for Scranton in the first half, they fired sixth shots (compared to seven for Drew), but only one was on net, which was saved by Drew goalie Jason Adamo that kept the Royals scoreless in the first period.

In the second half, Hammert made two more saves on shots on net for the Rangers, as the Scranton defense continued to hold through the 70th minute.

In the 73rd minute, Scranton was granted a golden opportunity to score their first goal of the night, as the Royals were awarded a penalty shot. However, Drew's Adamo saved the attempt from sophomore Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata Somerville), keeping the Royals off the scoreboard in the process.

With under 10 minutes left, Scranton fired two more shots that went high and wide. Finally,  in the 87th minute, Drew scored the go-ahead goal, taking the match by two scores over the Royals after salting away the final three-plus minutes of regulation.

Overall, Drew outshot Scranton, 17-14, and had a slim 7-6 edge in corner kicks. In net, Hammert finished the night with four saves to keep the Royals in the match for the majority of regulation.

The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Susquehanna in the Red Card Cancer match at Fitzpatrick Field. The Landmark Conference tilt gets underway at 4 p.m.
