ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman right-hander Bobby Hegarty (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had the best outing of his young career on Monday, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to lead The University of Scranton baseball team past Lebanon Valley, 9-4, on Monday at McGill Field.
Hegarty entered the game in the bottom of the fourth and proceeded to allow just four hits without a walk while striking out two while picking up his first career victory. He entered with two runners on and one out in the fourth and escaped the jam, then stranded two runners in the fifth with a big strikeout to end the inning.
The Royals (11-14) gave Hegarty plenty of offense, banging out 17 hits en route to the nine runs. Senior second baseman Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) finished with four hits, including a triple, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Junior designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) also had four hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in a run.
Sophomore second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) added two hits, an RBI and a run, as did sophomore first baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.).
With the nine runs, the Royals have now scored eight or more runs in seven of their last eight games. They are averaging 9.5 runs per game in that span.
Scranton is right back in action on Tuesday, hosting William Paterson at 5 p.m. at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.
