MOOSIC, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team could not come up with a clutch hit on Sunday and consequently saw a tight game turn into a 7-2 loss in the final game of a Landmark Conference series against Drew University at PNC Field.
The Royals (12-17, 1-11 Landmark) outhit Drew, 12-8, but left nine runners on base in the defeat. The Rangers (20-11, 8-4 Landmark) turned a 2-1 game after five innings into a runaway victory with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Senior left fielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) reached a milestone in the defeat, recording the 100th hit of his career with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. He becomes the second Royal this season to reach 100 career hits, joining senior infielder Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), who reached the milestone earlier this year.
Sophomore third baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had a solo home run to highlight the Scranton offense. Junior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) finished with three hits and freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) had two hits.
Senior righty Sean McNamara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Fordham Prep) held Drew hitless over the first five innings, but still found himself trailing 2-1 as a result of four walks and three batter hit by pitches. He took the loss after working 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and those four walks and three hit batters.
The Royals return to action on Monday when they travel to Dallas, Pa. to take on Misericordia at 4 p.m.
