Freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) and junior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had eighth-inning RBIs and junior lefty Brian Markowski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) didn't allow an earned run in 3 1/3 innings as The University of Scranton baseball team defeated Elizabethtown, 5-3, in a Landmark Conference game on Monday at Connell Park.
The Royals (9-11, 1-5 Landmark) rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the sixth inning to snap a five-game losing streak. Markowski picked up the win, his first of the season, by holding the Blue Jays to an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out four. He worked out of jams in each of the last three innings, including stranding two runners in the top of the ninth.
Haag and Schneider had the key at bats after the game entered the bottom of the eighth tied at 3. Haag, who hits left-handed, faced a lefty reliever with a runner on second and blooped a single to right to break the tie. He advanced to second on the throw home, which turned out to be key when he scored on Schneider's line drive single two batters later for a 5-3 lead.
Scranton also received a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth from senior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) for a 2-1 lead. After Elizabethtown (10-8, 3-2 Landmark) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth, junior designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 3.
Standen was the lone Royal with two hits, and he finished the three-game series with eight total hits. Senior left fielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) also added a single and scored the go-ahead run on Haag's single in the eighth.
Senior righty Sean McNamara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Fordham Prep) worked the first 5 2/3 on the mound, allowing two runs while scattering 10 hits and walking one while striking out a pair.
The Royals are back in action on Tuesday when they go on the road to face Montclair State at 4 p.m. in Montclair, N.J.
