WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Scranton baseball team could not slow the Catholic University offense in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday, losing 11-10 and 19-8.
The Royals (9-13, 1-7 Landmark) rallied from a 10-1 deficit in the opener to tie the game at 10 in the seventh, but the Cardinals (19-6, 7-3 Landmark) walked off on a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. In the second game, the Royals held a 5-4 lead in the fourth, but the Cardinals scored 13 times in the bottom half of the inning.
Game one – box score
Scranton scored once in the fifth, six times in the sixth and twice in the seventh to turn a 10-1 deficit into a tie game. Freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton) had a two-run homer in the sixth and junior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had a solo homer in the fifth. The Royals tied it in the seventh on a two-out balk.
Haag finished with a double, homer, two RBIs and two runs, junior third baseman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) singled, doubled and had an RBI, junior right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled, doubled and scored twice, and junior shortstop Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) had two hits, two RBIs and a run. Junior designated hitter Seth Bower (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) also doubled, drove in two and scored a run.

Standen finished game two with a single, double, two RBIs and a run, and senior shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled, tripled, drove in a run and scored a run.
Junior right fielder Ryan Coonahan (Oreland, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) singled, drove in two and scored a run, and senior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) singled, stole a base, scored twice and drove in a run.
The Royals and Cardinals will complete the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
