UNION, N.J. – Freshman forward Corinne McDonald (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) and junior forward Jamie Hreniuk (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) scored second-half goals to lift The University of Scranton women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Kean in the Cougar Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The victory marks the second straight season in which the Royals (2-0) have opened the season with a pair of victories. Last season, they posted 2-0 victories over Kean and Cortland State in the Cougar Classic.

After a scoreless first half that saw 14 shots in total, Scranton broke through in the 54th minute when McDonald received a cross from junior midfielder Taylor Stevens (Yardley, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and sent a one-time shot into the back of the net for her first career goal. The assist was first of the season for Stevens and the 15th of her career.

Hreniuk provided the insurance goal in the 67th minute when she broke free past the defense and beat the goalkeeper for her second goal in as many days. She now has 15 career goals.

Scranton finished the afternoon with a 15-9 edge in shots, but the Kean goalkeeper kept her team in the game with eight saves, including seven in the first half. Scranton junior keeper Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had three stops in her second career shutout, both in the past two days.

The Royals also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior forward Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy) came off the bench to lead the team with three shots.

Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when the Royals host Swarthmore in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
