SCRANTON, Pa. - Three different University of Scranton men's soccer players tallied goals in the first half, as the Royals coasted past visiting Wilkes, 3-0, on Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the win, the Royals moved to 6-3 overall on the year, while Wilkes fell to 4-5 with the defeat.
In the victory, the Royals opened up aggressive on the offensive end, firing four shots in the first 20 minutes.
In the 21st minute, Scranton cashed in on their fifth shot of the contest, as senior Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) scored off an assist from fellow senior James Harris (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade) to give the Royals the lead at 1-0. For Casey, it was his fourth goal of the year, as Harris recorded his first assist of the year on the play.
Nine minutes later, Scranton made the score 2-0 in their favor, as freshman Matt Bolock (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) scored his first career goal right in front of the net off an assist from sophomore Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville). For Roberts, it was his second assist of the year.
A mere 41 seconds later, the Royals made it a 3-0 match, as sophomore Justin Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep) scored his first career goal off an assist from Bolock. Bolock recorded his first career assist on the score, as Scranton rode the 3-0 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Scranton's defense took over the contest, as they held Wilkes to just two shots in the final 45 minutes of action (one of which was on goal) to record their fifth straight win over the Colonels in the all-time series (Wilkes' last win over Scranton came in 2007).
Overall, Scranton dominated the stat sheet in the win, outshooting Wilkes 16-3, while holding a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Elizabethtown for a Landmark Conference showdown. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
