WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Sophomore midfielders Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) and Christian Savino (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored first-half goals to lift The University of Scranton men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over King's on Wednesday night.
Roberts broke a scoreless tie with his first goal of the season and fourth of his career in the 30th minute. He sent a perfect one-time shot into the lower right corner off a pass from junior midfielder Jeremy Mammen (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township). The assist was first of the season for Mammen and the second of his career.
Savino doubled the Royals' lead in the 38th minute when he scored an unassisted goal, the first of his career. His long shot deflected off a defender and into the goal for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
King's scored a goal in the 52nd minute to put pressure on Scranton, but the Royals' defense allowed just one shot the rest of the way, and it was not on goal.
Scranton finished the night with a 12-5 edge in shots. Sophomore midfielder Riley Smith (New Hope, Pa./New Hope Solebury) led the team with three shots. The Royals also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The victory improves Scranton to 25-3 all-time against King's. Wednesday night's meeting was the first between the two schools since 2006, the last season in which both were members of the Freedom Conference. Scranton joined the Landmark Conference the following season.
The Royals will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Cortland, N.Y. to face Cortland State at 1 p.m.
