GLASSBORO, N.J. – Senior Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) became The University of Scranton's all-time leader for career kills on Saturday as the volleyball team earned a pair of non-conference victories at the Rowan Quad, sweeping Frostburg and the host Profs to improve to 14-11 on the season.
Kirwan broke Anne McGovern's previous record of 1,650 kills established from 1996-1999 on Scranton's 20th point of the third set of Saturday's opening match, a 3-0 sweep for the Royals over Frostburg. The senior's record-breaking kill was the ninth of the match and she added five more in Scranton's sweep of Rowan later in the day and now has 1,656 kills for her career after breaking McGovern's mark which had stood for 19 years.
Match 1 vs. Frostburg
Scranton built a two-games-to-none advantage in Saturday's opening match against Frostburg (7-15) with back-to-back 25-20 decisions to open the match. In the third set, the Royals reeled off 10 of the final 13 points, including Kirwan's milestone kill, to complete the sweep with a 25-14 decision.
Kirwan and sophomore Jillian Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) tied for a match-high with nine kills apiece against the Bobcats (7-16) while senior Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and freshman Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School for Girls) put down five kills apiece.
Sophomore Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) put up a match-high 30 assists while classmate Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) led all players with 13 digs in the match.
Boken added a match-high five blocks to go along with four aces while Kirwan served up a match-best five aces in the win over Frostburg.
As a team, the Royals posted a .182 hitting percentage and aced the Bobcats 14 times while limiting Frostburg to just a .013 percent effort on its attack attempts.
Match 2 vs. Rowan
In Saturday's second match against host Rowan (13-11), Scranton won a tight opening set, 25-22, before dominating the Profs in the second set, 25-10, to claim a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Royals rounded out their second sweep of the day and ninth three-set win of the season with a 25-17 decision in game three.
Boken and junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tied for a match-high with 11 kills apiece as the Royals hit .175 as a team against the Profs.
Sophomore Kyra Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) dished out a match-best 34 assists while Kirwan led all players with 15 digs.
Schetroma reached double-figure digs for the second time on the day with 12 and served four of Scranton's 10 aces in the match.
The Royals limited Rowan to a .040 team hitting percentage in the match.
