NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – There are occasions, particularly in soccer, when the final score is not indicative of what took place over 90 minutes. Sunday night's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament second-round game between The University of Scranton and 11th-ranked Christopher Newport was one of those times.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, but in the end, the Captains managed a pair of goals while the Royals came up empty in a 2-0 defeat. Scranton ends its season at 16-2-3, the third straight season and fourth in the past six in which the Royals won at least 15 games.

Christopher Newport (19-1-0) scored goals in the 13th and 42nd minutes to advance to the Sweet 16. The Captains held a 23-13 edge in shots for the game, but possession was even for almost the entire night.

Scranton regrouped after giving up the second goal just before half and stayed in the game through the early part of the second half. The strong defensive effort – led by senior goalkeeper Colleen Berry (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) – turned the momentum in the Royals' favor, and they controlled possession for the better part of the final 20 minutes.

But the numerous chances the Royals' created did not turn into a goal despite having the Captains on their back foot at the end of the night.

Berry finished the night with 10 saves, a season high and the fourth time in her career she had double digit saves. Seniors Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East), Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy) and Taylor Stevens (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), and sophomore Mazie Stiles (Nyack, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) had two shots apiece to lead the attack.

The Royals were making their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 18th in program history. They advanced to the second round for the second consecutive season and the eighth time in team history.
