DALLAS, Pa. – For the second time in the last three days, The University of Scranton softball team rebounded from a loss in the first game of doubleheader with a win in the nightcap to split the twinbill.  After Misericordia (12-10) walked off with a 4-2 win in Thursday's opener, the Royals (16-4) won game two 4-1 as each team took a game of the non-conference doubleheader.

Game 1

In Thursday's first game, the Cougars got a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Scranton, 4-2.

Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an unearned run.

The Royals leveled the contest at one-apiece in the top of the third when Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) doubled to left field to bring in Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock).

The Cougars went back in front on an RBI single in the home fourth before the visitors knotted the game up at 2-2 in the top of the sixth as Allie Hotchkiss (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) came home a sacrifice fly from Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall).

Scranton starter Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) recorded the first two outs of the bottom of the seventh inning before issuing a walk.  Misericordia's Amanda Butera then ended the game with a walk-off home run over the right field fence.

Rentzheimer, who made her 64th career start, one shy of Scranton's all-time record, suffered the loss after allowed three earned runs one eight hits while striking out seven batters.  The senior needs six more K's to break the Royals' all-time record for strikeouts by a pitcher.

Hampsey and Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) had two hits apiece for Scranton in the loss as the Royals also collected eight hits in the contest.

Game 2

In Thursday's second game, Scranton scored four runs in the first three innings which was more than enough for Sweeney, who improved to 8-1 on the season with a complete game in the circle.

Sweeney and DeSarno hit RBI singles in the Royals' first trip to the plate during the nightcap to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

Cyan Scarduzio (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) came home with Scranton's third run the following inning as the Cougars attempted to throw Hampsey out stealing second.

In the visitor's third, Sweeney launched her fifth home run of the season over the centerfield fence to give the Royals a 4-0 cushion.  The freshman has connected on four home runs in the team's last six games.

Misericordia broke up Sweeney's shutout bid with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that was all the offense Cougars were able to muster.

Sweeney scattered five hits and struck out five batters in the victory.

DeSarno and Sweeney had two hits apiece to lead the Royals while Sweeney also scored two runs and had a pair of RBI in the win as the Royals totaled nine hits in the game.
