Baseball's Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short Against William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. – The University of Scranton baseball team trailed by nine runs entering the ninth inning on Tuesday at William Paterson. The Royals staged a big rally in that final inning, but came up short in a 14-11 loss to the Pioneers.

The Royals (10-12) were behind 14-5 going into the ninth inning after William Paterson scored 12 times combined in the seventh and eighth innings. Scranton made things interesting with six runs in the top of the ninth with the big blow coming on a two-out grand slam by sophomore left fielder Brandon Peters (Peckville, Pa./Valley View). The Royals got another runner on base, but the rally ended their.

Scranton held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Pioneers (19-9) scored four times in the seventh to take the lead, then added eight runs in the eighth inning to take the big lead going into the ninth.

Sophomore shortstop Travis Adams (Clark, N.J./St. Joseph's-Metuchen) led the Scranton offense with three singles, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore designated hitter Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) doubled, singled twice, drove in a run and scored a run.

The Royals also received two singles, a run and an RBI from freshman catcher Anthony Lambroia (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and a single, double and an RBI from senior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.).

Sophomore lefty Kyle Bravin (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) gave the Royals five strong innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out two in a no-decision.

The baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday when the Royals host Widener at Volpe Field at 5 p.m
