Rentzheimer, Brogan Help Softball Split At Wilkes on Tuesday

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Senior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) went the distance on the mound and fellow senior Kaitlyn Brogan (Oreland, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) scored the tying run and later delivered an RBI single as part of an extra-innings rally in game one as The University of Scranton softball team split a doubleheader at Wilkes on Tuesday, winning 5-3 in eight innings and falling 9-1 in six innings.

With the win in the opening game, the Royals (27-7) matched the program record for wins in a season. They also won 27 games in 2008, when they finished 27-14.

Game 1 – Scranton 5, Wilkes 3 (8 inn.) – box score

Scranton tied the score in the top of the seventh when sophomore catcher Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) delivered a two-out RBI single, driving in Brogan, to knot the game at 3.

In the top of the eighth, the Royals scored a run with the help of a pair of errors, then Brogan delivered the insurance run with an RBI single.

Rentzheimer worked all eight innings in the circle for her 12th win of the season, allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Zinn finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Brogan had a hit, an RBI and a run, and freshman first baseman Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled and scored twice.

Game 2 – Wilkes 9, Scranton 1 (6 inn.) – box score

Scranton took the lead with a run in the second inning, but Wilkes (21-15) scored twice in the fourth and six times in the fifth before putting the game away with a run in the sixth.

Sophomore third baseman Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) doubled and scored on an RBI sac fly by freshman shortstop Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) for Scranton's run.

The Royals will return to action on Thursday when they host Muhlenberg at 4 p.m. at Magis Field.
