BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton opened the Landmark Conference softball championships with a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna on Friday afternoon at Moravian. The second-seeded Royals, now 32-9 on the season, will take on top-seed Moravian in a winner's bracket game starting at approximately 3:30 this afternoon.
The 11th ranked Greyhounds defeated fourth-seeded Catholic in Friday's opening game, 7-0.
Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drove in the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and tossed a complete game to earn her 17th victory of the season.
Scranton took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first inning as the River Hawks misplayed a ball hit by Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) which allowed Sweeney to score the game's first run.
Susquehanna tied the game up in the top of the second inning on an RBI single and the game would remain knotted at one-apiece until the home fifth.
Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) drew a two-out walk in the home fifth before scoring on Sweeney's double to right field.
The River Hawks put their first two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Sweeney got out unscathed both times, getting a double play followed by a groundout in the sixth inning before striking out the final three batters in the seventh inning to close out the victory.
Sweeney, who made her 21st start of the season to tied Isabel Mendez's single-season record set in 2008, improved to 17-3 on the season with her 14th complete game of the year. The freshman tied a season-high with eight strikeouts while working around six hits and four walks.
Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Sweeney's RBI double and a single from Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) were the Royals' only four hits of the contest.
