ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Megan Gallagher (Thorndale, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) scored twice in the opening 19 minutes to lead The University of Scranton field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Muhlenberg in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening.
Gallagher wasted little time getting the 2018 season going, scoring just 3:56 into the contest to give Scranton a 1-0 lead. She doubled that advantage 15 minutes later on a penalty corner off a feed from senior forward Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham).
The defense took over from there, holding Muhlenberg scoreless until there were just 30 seconds left in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) made four saves in goal for the Royals.
Muhlenberg held a narrow 6-5 edge in shots on the night and also led 5-4 in corners.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they play their home opener at Weiss Field at 7 p.m. against William Paterson.
