There were plenty of chances both early and late for The University of Scranton men's soccer team in its non-conference matchup on Wednesday night against Misericordia. But in the end, none of those chances amounted to a much-needed goal in what would end as a 1-1 draw at Weiss Field.

The Royals (2-1-2) needed a 78th minute goal from freshman midfielder Bryce Schiltz (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) to force overtime. Schiltz knotted the match when he streaked toward the near post and knocked home a low cross from junior defender Christian Savino (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep). It was Schiltz's first goal while Savino picked up his second assist.

Misericordia (1-2-1) had taken the lead on a goal in the 12th minute when Dylan Molyneaux knocked home a loose ball amid a scramble in front of the Royals' goal. But the Royals had two chances even before that to get on the scoreboard first, but could not convert either in the early going.

In extra time, the Royals had two good chances in each period, but neither found the back of the net. The last came with 12 seconds remaining, but a shot from in close on the left side sailed just wide.

Scranton held a 22-14 edge in shots and each team had eight corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Blake Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep) finished with five saves, including two diving stops in the second half, for the Royals.

The men's soccer team will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Royals take on Lycoming in Williamsport, Pa.
