SCRANTON – The University of Scranton women's soccer team traveled a few miles across town to face Marywood last night and scored a touchdown … or so it seemed. Six players scored as the Royals rolled to their fourth straight victory to open the season, 7-0, over the Pacers.

Scranton (4-0) jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead thanks to a spurt of three goals in a span of 9:30 just before halftime. The Royals had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by senior midfielder Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and freshman midfielder Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield).

Then, starting in the 31st minute, they got a penalty kick goal by junior defender Rebecca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and goals from freshman midfielder Olivia Traphagen (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) and sophomore forward Corinne McDonald (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) to push the lead to 5-0 with five minutes left in the half.

Elliott and freshman Jessica Letherbarrow (Westtown, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) added second-half goals to complete the rout.

Traphagen, Letherbarrow, senior forward Annelise DePaulo (Roseto, Pa./Moravian Academy) and freshman midfielder Steph Lowrey (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) all had one assist apiece in the victory.

Scranton was on the attack all night, holding a 26-9 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman keepers Jocey McCauley (Port Monmouth, N.J./Livingston) and Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) combined on the shutout, with McCauley making one save in the opening half and Steinberg making two in the second half.

The Royals will play their first game on Weiss Field at the Quinn Athletics Campus on Friday night when they host Farmingdale State at 7 p.m.
