DALLAS, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team scored an early goal in both halves of Tuesday night's non-conference game at Misericordia on its way to a 2-0 victory. The Royals move to a perfect 4-0 on the young season with their second consecutive shutout win.
Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) put Scranton ahead just 3:35 into Tuesday's contest by scoring the first goal of her collegiate career. The freshman found a loose ball in traffic in front of the Cougars' cage and put home the shot to give the Royals the early 1-0 edge.
Scranton doubled its lead just under two minutes into the second half as Megan Gallagher (Thorndale, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) netted her third goal of the season, putting back a shot past the Misericordia goalkeeper with Gracie McClatchy (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) picking up her second assist of the season on the tally.
The two-goal cushion was more than enough for the Scranton defense which did not allow a shot on goal in the contest allowing Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) to record the shutout win without being forced to make a save.
Scranton dominated statistically, finishing the evening with a 14-1 advantage in shots and holding an 8-2 lead in penalty corners over the Cougars, who remain winless in five games this season.
The Royals will next welcome King's to Weiss Field on Thursday evening for a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
