Volleyball Opens Landmark Conference Slate With a Pair of Wins

The University of Scranton volleyball team opened Landmark Conference play on Saturday by sweeping both Elizabethtown and Goucher in the John Long Center.  The pair of thee-set victories lifts the Royals' record to 12-10 (2-0 Landmark) on the season.    

Match 1 vs. Elizabethtown

In Saturday's opening match against the Blue Jays (9-11, 0-1 Landmark), Scranton came out strong with a 25-16 victory in the opening set before claiming a two-games-to-none advantage with a 25-17 decision in the second frame.

In the third set, the Royals overcame a 17-9 deficit and fended off a match point before getting a huge block from seniors Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) followed by a Manning kill to claim the match with a thrilling, 28-26 comeback win.

Kirwan paced Scranton with match-high 13 kills to go along with 13 digs, tying with classmate Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) for the match-lead in digs. Monastra and freshman Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School for Girls) added eight kills apiece in the victory while tying for a match-high with four aces apiece.

Sophomore Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) handed out 36 assists while picking up nine digs and three service aces while Manning led the way at the net with four blocks.

Match 2 vs. Goucher

In Saturday's finale against Goucher (7-10, 0-2 Landmark), Scranton dispatched the Gophers with set wins of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21 to complete their seventh sweep of the season and third in a row.

Monastra and junior Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led a balanced attack for the Royals with eight kills apiece while Kirwan and sophomore Tess Ungerleider (Springboro, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) contributed seven kills apiece. 

Sophomore Kyra Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) dished out a match-high 37 assists while sophomore Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) paced the Royals with 13 digs.

Manning, Ungerleider, and freshman Trinity Manning (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) blocked two shots apiece in the victory.

Scranton returns to the court on Friday when they take on Eastern on the opening night of the Rowan Quad in Glassboro, New Jersey.  First serve between the Royals and Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m.
