The University of Scranton and King's College battled each other and relentless heat for 110 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, but neither side was able to produce a goal in a 0-0 draw at Weiss Field. The Royals remain unbeaten on the season at 2-0-1 while recording their first shutout of the young season.
The two teams split six shots evenly in the first half, but only combined to place three of those shots on target. Making his first collegiate start, freshman goalkeeper Jake Hodlofski (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) stopped the lone shot the Monarchs placed on frame in the opening stanza to keep the game level.
The game opened up a bit more in the second half with Scranton twice narrowly missing out on taking the lead as Nick Kapelewski (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was denied on a point blank head by the Monarchs' goalkeeper, who tipped a laser off the foot of Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) just over the bar minutes later.
At the other end, Blake Hammert (Archbald, Pa./Scranton Prep), who assumed the Royals' goaltending duties at the break, came up with a pair of saves to send the game to overtime.
Hammert came up big the extra 20 minutes of golden goal soccer, preserving the tie with four stops, all of which came in the second overtime period. The junior made a fine diving stop on a shot through traffic before denying the Monarchs are a short breakaway just moments later to secure the clean sheet for Scranton.
King's (0-2-1) finished the afternoon with a 17-9 advantage in shots with a narrow, 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Royals, who received six saves from Hammert, generated eight corner kick chances to six for the Monarchs.
Scranton welcomes Cortland, ranked #23 in the nation, to Weiss Field on Saturday for a non-conference matchup starting at 3:30 p.m.
