POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The University of Scranton won a pair of matches on Friday night to kick off the Vassar College Invitational. The Royals opened the tournament with a three-set victory over New England in Friday's opening match before topping Fredonia in four sets in the nightcap to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Match 1 vs. New England
Scranton breezed past the Nor'easters (1-4) in three sets in its first match of the night to get back in the win column after dropping its last two matches entering Friday's action.
The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 decision in the opening set and pulled out a 25-23 decision in the second set to seize control of the match. Scranton cruised to a 25-16 win in the third frame to close out the victory.
Megan Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) powered the Royals' attack with a match-high 16 kills on 31 attempts for a .419 hitting percentage while adding seven digs in the match.
Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) totaled 10 kills while Catherine Manning (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) added eight kills and led all players with three blocks in the match.
Kyra Bevenour (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) set a match-high with 32 assists while Molly Dunfee (King of Prussia, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) paced Scranton defensively with nine digs.
Kristin Bush (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and Tess Ungerleider (Springboro, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) contributed seven digs apiece with Ungerleider and Manning both serving up a pair of aces in the win.
As a team, Scranton hit .235 in the match while limiting New England to a .072 showing on their offensive attempts in the contest.
Match 2 vs. Fredonia
The Royals and Blue Devils (3-2) split the first two sets of Friday's nightcap before Scranton forged ahead with a narrow, 25-23 triumph in the third set. The Royals closed out their second victory of the evening with a 25-17 decision in game four.
Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) paced Scranton with 11 kills and completed a double-double with 11 digs in the victory.
Manning put down 10 kills and had three blocks while Trinity Manning (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) totaled a match-best four blocks against Fredonia.
Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) dished out a match-high 32 assists while Monastra led all players with four aces in the match.
Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) led all players with 17 digs in the win.
Scranton posted a .107 hitting percentage compared to a .064 effort by the Blue Devils.

Scranton will wrap up this weekend's tournament with two matches on Saturday. The Royals will take on Western Connecticut State at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. contest against host Vassar.
