Graham, Vitkus lead Volleyball to Three-Set Sweep at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN - Freshman Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and junior Jillian Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had 12 kills, apiece, as The University of Scranton volleyball team swept past host Muhlenberg in non-conference action, 3-0, on Wednesday night (28-26, 25-23, 25-20).

With the win, Scranton moved to 10-7 overall, while Muhlenberg fell to 6-10 with the defeat.

In the opening set of the match, Scranton put together quite a rally to go up 1-0 on the host Mules.

Down 24-20 late and facing a 1-0 deficit in the face, the Royals fought back, as they scored five points in a row to take a 25-24 lead on Muhlenberg. The Mules, however, countered with a point to tie the match back up at 25-all.

After trading points, the Royals took the set after a Graham kill, then a clinching service ace by junior Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), as Scranton went up, 1-0, in the match with the thrilling two-point win.

With all the momentum on their side, Scranton pulled past Muhlenberg in the second set, clinching the set and a 2-0 lead with the score at 24-23 on a kill by sophomore Trinity Manning (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial).

After taking two hard-fought sets, the third set was a breeze for the Royals, as a run in the middle of play gave Scranton an insurmountable 20-15 lead on their way to a five-point game-clinching victory.

Overall, Graham and Vitkus once again both went into double-figures in kills in a match with 12, apiece. For Graham and Vitkus, it marked the fifth time on the year each has gone into double-digits on the attack, as well.

Elsewhere, Norman set up the Royals attack all night with 29 assists, and junior Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) once again led the defense with 16 digs. Manning, meanwhile, also had three block-assists at the net, as well.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, as they host a pair of Landmark Conference matches inside the John Long Center. First, Scranton takes on Catholic at 12 p.m., followed by a contest with Juniata at 5 p.m.
