Softball Pulls Away From Westfield St, Falls to Fredonia St. on Day Two of Spring Break Slate

CLERMONT, Fla. - The University of Scranton softball team smashed 13 hits and scored 10 runs, then rode another strong pitching performance by sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) to take a 10-1 win in six innings over Westfield State on Sunday.

In Scranton's first game of the day, they fell to Fredonia St., 3-1. With the split, the Royals are 3-1 on the short season.

Against Westfield St., Scranton scored three runs in the first two innings to take a quick 3-0 lead. After the Owls scored a run in the bottom of the third, the Royals pulled away with four runs in the fourth to go up 7-1, then added three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a nine-run lead.

Three outs away from ending the game in the bottom of the sixth, Scranton did just that, as Sweeney retired the side to move to 2-0 on the young season with another complete game win, as she allowed just three hits in the victory while striking out six.

On the offensive end, every Scranton starter registered at least one hit in the Westfield State game.

Three players had multiple-hit contests - sophomore Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) (2-for-3 with a run scored), junior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (2-for-4 with two runs scored), and freshman Kira Livezey (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) (2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored).

Elsewhere, sophomore Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and junior Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) had two RBI, apiece in the Westfield St. win, with Donnelly scoring a pair of runs. Sweeney, freshman Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and freshman Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) rounded out the Royals with RBI in the win over Westfield St.

Against Fredonia St., the Royals opened a opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Sweeney, but were stymied the rest of the game, as Fredonia scored all their runs in the bottom of the second inning, then hung on over the final five innings to take the win.

In the pitching circle for the Royals, Livezey took the loss (0-1) after tossing one and two-thirds, allowing just one earned run on two hits. Sophomore Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) then came on and tossed four and a thirds innings of shutout relief, striking out four while allowing just one hit.

The University of Scranton softball team returns to action on Monday, as they play twice. First, the Royals take on Mount Union at 9:30 a.m., then the Royals entertain North Park at 11:45 a.m. Both games will be played at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
