HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team kicked off Landmark Conference play on Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader at Juniata. The Royals (11-5, 2-0 Landmark), who have now won five straight games, took the opener 9-4 before defeating the Eagles (4-10, 0-2 Landmark) 17-7 in five innings to complete the sweep.
Game 1
In Sunday's opener, Scranton took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bats before Juniata pulled to within a run in the bottom of the second.
The Royals countered with the next seven runs to hold a 9-1 advantage following the top of the sixth before the Eagles plated the final three runs of the contest.
Sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), who tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts to notch the win in the circle, went 2-for-2 with a home run, two walks, three RBI to pace Scranton's offense.
Freshman Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), junior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), and freshman Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) added two hits apiece for the Royals, who held an 11-5 advantage in hits for the contest.
Game 2
In Sunday's second game, Juniata led 3-2 after two innings before Scranton scored 15 runs in innings three through five, highlighted by a seven-run fourth.
Sweeney had a huge game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBI and three runs scored. Sweeney, who hit a grand slam in the Scranton's big fourth inning, was one of three Royals to homer in the game as Alich and senior Cyan Scarduzio (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) both hit their first career home runs in the win.
Zinn and sophomore Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) added three hits apiece with Zinn and Alich driving in three runs apiece. Zinn, who doubled twice, also scored a game-high four runs.
Sophomore Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) improved to 7-1 in the circle on the season, spinning a complete game with just one earned run against while striking out four batters.
The Royals finished with a commanding 14-6 advantage in hits in the game two victory.
