CLERMONT, Fla. - Sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) tossed a one-hitter in the pitching circle in a 5-1 win over Washington & Jefferson, then smashed a two-run home run against Sage in the nightcap, a hit that was the eventual game-winner in an 8-6 victory, as The University of Scranton softball team opened their 2019 slate with a pair of victories on Saturday.

In game one against W&J, Sweeney allowed her lone run in the contest in the top of the first inning, as it came on a wild pitch. But, in the bottom half of that inning, the Royals scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead after one. Junior Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) had a two-RBI single in the frame, while freshman Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) smacked an RBI double, giving Scranton a two-run lead.

The final two RBI of the game for Scranton were registered by senior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. In the fourth, Zinn knocked home sophomore Ryann Kemmerling (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown Regional) on a sacrifice fly, and in the sixth, she brought home sophomore Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) on an RBI single.

The four-run cushion was more than enough for Sweeney to work with the rest of the game, as she allowed her lone hit of the contest in the top of the fifth inning (a single). Striking out six in the victory, Sweeney tossed 108 pitches in her complete-game win, as she's now 18-4 in the circle in her Scranton career.

At the plate in the W&J game, the Royals bashed 11 hits, as freshman Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) led the way in her first collegiate game, going 3-for-4. Duffy also went a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring a run, as well.

In the Sage game, the Royals jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, then held off a late Sage rally to take a two-run victory.

The Royals will continue their spring break trip of games in Florida on Sunday, as they take on Fredonia St. (12 p.m.) and Westfield St. (2:15 p.m.) in a pair of games that will be played at the Hancock Recreational Complex in Clermont, Fla.
