Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score

Junior Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) hit a two-run, walk-off double in the second game of The University of Scranton's softball doubleheader with Wilkes on Wednesday night to give the Royals a thrilling, 4-3 victory over the Colonels and a sweep of the non-conference twin bill at Magis Field.

The Royals, who won Wednesday's opener, 5-1, behind a complete game two-hitter from sophomore Jennifer Sweeney (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) improve to 19-7 on the season with the wins.

Game 1

In Wednesday's opener, Scranton scored two runs in the first inning and added three more in the second inning.

Sweeney made the early runs runs stand, tossing a complete game, two-hitter, striking out seven batters in the contest.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from junior Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and freshman Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area).

Scranton tacked on three more runs in the home second as junior Anna Price (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) came home on an error before Zinn delivered a two-run double down the right field line.

Wilkes (15-10) scored its only run of the game on a one-out double in the top of the fifth, but Sweeney retired the final eight batters she faced to close out the win.

Zinn, Alich, along with sophomores Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and Mackenzie Duffy (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Lackawanna Trail), had two hits apiece for Scranton, which had a 9-2 advantage in hits for the contest.

Zinn had a game-high three RBI and had a double, as did Donnelly and Price.

Game 2

In Monday's nightcap, the Colonels took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in their first at-bats of the game, but Zinn hit a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first to level the score at 2-2.

An RBI single in the top of the second gave Wilkes a 3-2 edge and the score remained that way for the next five innings, sending the Royals to their last at-bats trailing by a run.

Alich led off the home seventh with a single to right center and was pinch run for by freshman Erika Witt (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern). Sophomore Allie Hotchkiss (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) came up as a pinch hitter and worked a walk to put runners on first and second.

DeSarno then stepped to the plate and laced the game-winning hit to the gap in right-center as Witt and Hotchkiss raced around the bases with the tying and winning runs.

Sophomore Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) improved to 11-2 on the season with a complete game effort in which she was charged with three runs on nine hits while striking out two batters.

Alich led the Royals with a pair of hits while Zinn and DeSarno drove in two runs apiece in the game two victory.
