Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches at Franklin & Marshall Tri-Match

LANCASTER, Pa. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (9-7) rallied after dropping the first set and picked up a 3-1 victory over the Haverford Fords (14-4) at the Franklin & Marshall Tri-Match in Lancaster on Saturday.

Scranton dropped a 3-0 decision to the host Diplomats (12-2) later in the day.

Freshman Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had 10 kills and junior Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) tallied a match-high 36 assists in the Royals' come-from-behind win over Haverford.

Scranton dropped the first set and trailed 13-10 in the second set before taking seven of the next eight points to take a 17-14 lead. The Fords cut the lead to 17-16, but the Royals responded and a service ace from sophomore Sabrina LiVolsi (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) capped off a 25-18 win. Things were all tied up at 17 apiece in the third set before Scranton won eight of the final 10 points and a kill by sophomore Eryn Boken (South Pasadena, Calif./Westridge School for Girls) gave the Royals a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth and final set featured momentum swings on both sides as Haverford raced out to a 10-3 lead, but the Royals rallied to tie things at 14 apiece. The set was deadlocked at 24 before consecutive points by Scranton preserved the victory.

Vitkus' 10 kills paced the Royals, while junior Jillian Graham (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added nine of her own. Norman tallied 36 assists, five service aces and six digs on the afternoon. Senior Kristin Bush (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) led the defense with 13 digs and also added five service aces, while junior Regina Schetroma (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) chipped in 12 digs.

Franklin & Marshall 3, Scranton 0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) | Box Score

The Royals fought hard, but fell to Franklin & Marshall 3-0 in their second match of the day.

Things were all tied at 20 in the second set, but a late run by the Diplomats allowed them to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Vitkus led Scranton with nine kills in the match and Graham registered eight. Norman recorded 19 assists and added a team-high eight digs along with sophomore Molly Dunfee.

The Royals will remain on the road to battle Muhlenberg in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Landmark Conference play opens on Saturday, Oct. 5 when Catholic and Juniata come to the John Long Center for a tri-match beginning at 12 p.m.
