SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (10-2, 10-2 Landmark) hit a three-run homer in each game and swept the Susquehanna River Hawks (6-6, 6-6, Landmark) in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.

The Royals took game one by a score of 3-1 and broke out for 10 runs in game two en route to a 10-2 victory.

Graduate student Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) tied the program's all-time doubles record (46) with a two-bagger in the nightcap and also sits two hits shy of tying the program's all-time hit record (186).

Game One

Junior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) hit a go-ahead three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Royals took game one, 3-1.

Trailing 1-0, Zinn led off the inning with an infield single and senior Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Alich's heroics. The home run was Alich's first of the season and the fifth of her career.

Sweeney allowed one run on eight hits while fanning five over seven innings and earned the win in the circle for the Royals. Gabby Bubba was dealt the loss for Susquehanna after giving up the three runs on six hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Susquehanna stranded 12 runners on base through the first six innings of the game and Sweeney retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the win.

Alich and Zinn both had multi-hit games for Scranton.

Game Two

Head coach Mia Collarini Wascura's squad plated four runs in the first inning and six in the sixth to complete the sweep of the doubleheader with the 10-2 win in game two.

Zinn knocked in a run with an RBI double and fellow graduate student Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) delivered an RBI single as part of the four-run first for the Royals after Susquehanna had scored a run in the top half of the inning.

The 4-1 score would hold until the sixth inning when the River Hawks cut the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single from Katie Koch before the Royals struck for six in the home half. Sweeney's three-run blast was the big blow in the frame, while DeSarno, sophomore Olivia Burd (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and freshman Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) also had RBI in the inning.

The round-tripper was Sweeney's fourth of the season which is tied for the most in the Landmark Conference.

Senior Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) surrendered the two runs on seven hits and struck out one in six innings of work to earn the win for the Royals, while Brooke Wiarda gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits and took the loss for the visitors.

Alich (3-3, 2 2B, R) and sophomore Lauren Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) who was 3-4 with two runs scored both had three-hit games for Scranton. Alich, Cawley and Sweeney all scored two runs apiece and DeSarno knocked in a pair of runs.

The senior class of DeSarno, Dowdell, Zinn, Allie Hotchkiss (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) was honored as part of a ceremony between games.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader at Susquehanna on Sunday afternoon. First pitch of game one at Sassafrass Softball Field in Selinsgrove is slated for 1 p.m.
