POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored the eventual game winner in the 24th minute, while fellow senior Isabella DiBenedetto (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) added another in the 34th minute, as The University of Scranton women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the 2021 season with a 2-0 win at Vassar on Saturday.
With the victory, the Royals moved to 3-0 on the young season, while Vassar dropped to 2-1 overall with the defeat.
To start, Vassar came out and attacked quickly on Scranton, but were denied throughout the first half by senior goalie Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), who made three stops in the first 45 minutes.
On one of the first scoring chances of the match for the Royals in the 24th minute, Elliott cashed in to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. The goal, which was unassisted, was the second of Elliott's senior year, while it was also the fifth game-winner of her career at Scranton.
The Royals' second goal then came 10 minutes later off the foot of DiBenedetto, who also scored, unassisted, to put Scranton up by two into intermission. The score was the first of DiBenedetto's career at Scranton.
Up by two goals entering the second half, the Royals defense took over the final 45 minute to notch their second straight shutout win, as Steinberg made two more saves in the second period to preserve the victory for the Royals.
Overall, Vassar did outshoot Scranton, 9-6, while the Royals had a 6-3 edge on corner kicks. Steinberg made a season-high five saves in net to preserve the shutout victory, the 10th of her career at Scranton.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team will finally play their 2021 home opener at Weiss Field on Wednesday night, as the Royals entertain Lebanon Valley, Things get underway at 7 p.m.
