Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior Jessica Letherbarrow (Westtown, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) scored the lone goal of the game in the 43rd minute and The University of Scranton women's soccer team (5-0) topped the Stevens Ducks (1-3-1) 1-0 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken.
This marked the third all-time meeting between the two programs and the Royals' first ever win against Stevens.
Scranton has also not allowed a goal in their last four games.
In the 43rd minute, Stevens goalie Izzy DiDario deflected a cross into the box and Letherbarrow was able to put the deflection in the back of the net to give the Royals the lead.
Stevens had a chance in the early going, but a shot from Nina Burden was blocked in the fourth minute. In the 33rd minute, senior goalie Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) made a save to keep the game scoreless at the time. The Ducks held a 6-2 shot advantage in the first half, but thanks to Letherbarrow's tally in the late stages of the half, Scranton was able to take the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Each team had a chance early in the second half and Stevens nearly tied the game in the 72nd minute as a shot from Jana Mucci rang off the crossbar. The Royals back line held firm over the final 18 minutes to preserve the shutout victory.
Stevens held a 9-3 shot advantage in the contest and Steinberg had one save in her 14th career shutout for the Royals.
Scranton returns home for a pair of contests this week as they will host Wilkes on Tuesday night before opening Landmark Conference play on Saturday versus Susquehanna. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
