Orth Leads the Way, as Volleyball Takes Eighth Straight; Beats Marywood, 3-1

Box Score

SCRANTON - Freshman Maddie Orth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) slammed home a game-high 14 kills to lead the way, as The University of Scranton volleyball team upended Marywood, 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14) on Tuesday night in Insalaco Arena.

With the victory, which was Scranton's eighth straight overall, the Royals moved to 14-2 for the year. Marywood dropped to 7-9 with the loss.

In the opening set of the match, things were back-and-forth between the Pacers and Royals, with the set coming to a head late with Marywood leading, 24-23, and serving on set point.

Here, the Royals went on a tear to end it, scoring three straight to take a 26-24 victory to go up 1-0 in the match. Up 25-24, sophomore Grace Kane (Cranford, N.J./Union Catholic) gave the Royals the win with a solo block.

The second set was much more uneventful, with the Royals rolling to a six-point victory. Down 2-0, however, the Pacers fought back in the third set, opening up an early lead and never looking back in a seven-point victory that extended the match to a fourth set.

But, that was where the match ended, as Scranton coasted from the get-go in the set to take an eventual 11-point victory over the Pacers and the match, 3-1.

Overall, Orth put together the best game of her young career at Scranton on the attack with her 13-kill evening. She also posted a double-double in the win, finishing with 13 digs on defense, as well.

Elsewhere, freshman Katherine Denitz (Lansdale, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) finished with six kills, while Kane had five kills and two blocks. Setting up the attack in the win was freshman Gianna Detorie (Rumford, R.I./Bishop Feehan), who had 14 assists, while junior Caileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished with eight assists.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Friday afternoon, as travel to Ithaca in their final non-conference match before Landmark Conference play begins on Saturday. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
