Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball Past Drew for Fifth Straight Win

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (12-7, 3-0 Landmark) notched a fifth straight win with a 3-0 sweep of Drew (9-8, 0-3 Landmark) in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday night at Baldwin Gym in Madison.

Scranton 3, Drew 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19)

The two teams traded points for a majority of the first set and Drew held a 15-12 lead before a service error led to the Royals taking four of the next five points to even the match at 16 apiece. Following four straight points for the Rangers, Scranton closed the set by taking nine of the final 11 points including two kills apiece by seniors Abby Rzucidlo (Garnet Valley, Pa./Ursuline Academy) and Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac).

With Drew holding an 8-3 lead in the early stages of the second set, the Royals responded with seven straight and 12 of the next 13 points, a stretch that included a trio of kills for junior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Drew was unable to get any closer than five points through the remainder of the set and Scranton cruised to the 25-16 win.

Vitkus added three more kills as head coach Jamie Spangler's team took nine of the first 10 points in the third set. The dominance would continue throughout much of the set as the Royals led by as many as 13 at 20-7 and despite a late Rangers rally that sliced the lead to 24-19, sophomore Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished things off with a kill to seal the sweep.

Scranton featured a balanced attack throughout the match as five different players tallied five kills or more led by 11 from Vitkus and seven from Keaveney. The latter also posted a .438 hitting percentage, while Vitkus hit .357.

Senior Caileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) tallied 26 assists on the night and freshman Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added five of her own to go along with a team-high 15 digs.

Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro paced the Rangers with 18 kills in the setback.

The Royals return home to host Marywood and Cabrini in non-conference matches on Friday night at the John Long Center. First serve versus Marywood is slated for 5 p.m. and action against Cabrini will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
